Gangotri: the origin of the River Ganges

Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganges and bench of the goddess Ganga, is one of the four sites in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage tour. The initial Gangotri Temple was constructed by the Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayagonwards where it meets the Alaknanda. The root of the divine river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.

According to Hindu history, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to exempt the sins of King Bhagiratha's predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries.
The Pujaris and Brahmins belong to the village of Mukhwa. The water from Gangotri is taken to offer to Lord Shiva. It is assumed that this water has an amrita  in it and will mitigate and  mollify the throat of Shiva who swallowed  the poison.
